Fence and work support come before headline power

Look for a fence you can set, lock and check consistently. Check adjustment instructions and replacement-part support, especially on a used saw. A fence that shifts after locking is a problem to correct before cutting, regardless of the motor’s advertised rating.

Rip capacity describes the available fence setting; it does not mean a compact table safely supports a full sheet by itself. Plan infeed and outfeed space and appropriate support. For sheet goods, breaking panels down with a suitable guided saw may be more manageable than feeding a full sheet through a small table saw.

Match the blade size and features to the work

Consider your stock thickness and the kinds of cuts you need. Compare the maker’s depth-of-cut specifications at the angles you use, rather than blade diameter alone. If dado work matters, verify whether the exact model permits it, the allowed stack dimensions and the required insert. Do not transfer the limits from one 10-inch saw to another.

Budget for a blade intended for your material and task. Keep its dimensions and speed rating within the saw’s requirements. A different blade can change cut quality, but it cannot fix a damaged fence, unstable stand or incorrectly aligned machine.

What to reserve beyond the saw price

• The correct stand or a stable, manufacturer-approved mounting arrangement.
• Suitable workpiece support and the required guards, riving knife and push aids.
• Eye and hearing protection, plus dust control appropriate to the work.
• A suitable blade and any specifically approved inserts you need.
• Delivery, tax and replacement parts for a used purchase.

Do not build an improvised enclosure around the motor to control dust. It can obstruct cooling and service access. Use the specified dust outlet and leave the machine’s ventilation clear.

Should you buy a used Bosch 4100 instead?

A sound used saw may offer a useful stand and fence within the same budget, but missing guards or obsolete parts can erase the saving. Get the model number before pricing replacements and inspect the complete machine before making an offer.
